Policy of the Romanian Ministry of Health

Preamble/Introduction

WHO Annual Report for 2001 shows that the psychiatric disorders are an important source of disabilities; five out of ten of the leading causes of disability are psychiatric conditions. The life prevalence of these conditions is approximately 33% that means that one out of three people will suffer in his/her life of a psychiatric condition diagnosed with international criteria worldwide accepted.

The prevalence on six months is approximately 20%. Even if in Romania we do not have recent epidemiological studies (because they are very expensive), there is no reason to believe that our country is situated below this theoretical level. By contrary, there are enough indicators that suggest significant higher values for the last decade (compared to the European average) such as: the general deterioration of the health condition of the population, the increased number of abuses and addictions to psychoactive substances, a higher suicide rate, a suprasaturation of the society with stress factors (such as the economic decline, high unemployment rate, low standard of living), the expansion of the aggressive and violent behaviors, etc.
