Speech delivered during the congress held by the “Kwartiermakers” association (22 May 2007)

When I was about ten, eleven years old, I sometimes went with my father to Wolfheze, a little place near Arnhem and near to the city we lived in. My father was a reverend and once in a wile he preached in the little church of Wolfheze, where they couldn’t afford their own reverend. Whenever he went, I went with him. Why, I do not know. The regional hospital for psychiatric illnesses was located in Wolfheze. It was over a hundred years old and its main building had stained glass windows but also barred windows. When we drove to the church we crossed the ground of the institution. It was a classical ground with old summerhouses, many trees and grass and a little field with goats and deer. And that is where I saw them walking: “the others”.
